Story Summary:

Two years ago, brilliant police detective Kiyotaka Narumi disappeared. His last words before leaving his wife and younger brother behind? "I'm going to follow the mystery of The Blade Children."

Fast forward to the present, and we meet Kiyotaka's brother Ayumu. Ayumu is a fiercely intelligent 10th grader who's smart enough to be bored by school, and bright enough to know that he can think circles around most adults. This becomes even more apparent when a mysterious death occurs at Ayumu's high school. At first glance, it looks like a suicide. But as the police investigate further, the clues point to murder. But as Ayumu digs deeper, he not only deduces who the murderer was and the unusual methods used to kill the victim, he also finds that the killings are tied to the Blade Children.

Joined by cheerful and inquisitive school reporter Hiyono and his sister-in-law, police detective Madoka Narumi, Ayumu embarks on an adventure that becomes increasingly mysterious and dangerous as he gets closer and closer to discovering the dark secrets of the Blade Children, and possibly the whereabouts of his brother Kiyotaka.

Main Characters

Ayumu Narumi
10th grader Ayumu is a fiercely intelligent teen who can solve crimes that leave older investigators baffled. But no matter how smart and talented he may be, Ayumu is haunted by his older brother Kiyotaka: the man who was always better at everything, and the man who somehow makes Ayumu feel that his talents are insignificant by comparison.

Hiyono Yuizaki
11th grader Hiyono is the president of the school newspaper and has a reporters' instinct for sniffing out the truth. Relentlessly cheerful Hiyono offers a humorous counterpart to Ayumu's ultra-serious tendencies, but don't let her cuteness fool you – she's smart and observant enough to be a valuable asset to Ayumu's investigations.

Madoka Narumi
Kiyotaka's wife Madoka is, like her husband, a police detective. Since Kiyotaka's disappearance, she has been taking care of Ayumu like his older sister. She respects Ayumu's intelligence and counts on his input to help solve a few difficult cases, but she also knows he's just a teenage boy, so she knows when to give him a good knock on the head to remind him of that fact.

Eyes Rutherford
17-year old Eyes is a world-class, world-famous pianist, second only to Kiyotaka in his musical gifts. When he arrives back in Japan after many years abroad, Eyes only has one request: He needs to see Ayumu Narumi. As the mystery unfolds, we find that Eyes is one of the Blade Children, but why does he allude to carrying out Kiyotaka's wishes in his private conversations?
