About the Manga:

Currently serialized in Ribon, a Japanese shojo manga anthology magazine, Gentlemen's Alliance Cross is the latest series from the creator of Full Moon o Sagashite and Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.

About the Author / Artist:

Born in 1978 in Aichi, Japan, Arina Tanemura made her manga debut in 1996 with Nibanme no Koi no Katachi (The Style of Second Love). Her first major success came with Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne (Phantom Thief Jeanne), about a high school girl who is the reincarnation of Joan of Arc who moonlights as an art thief/demon exorcist.

This popular shojo manga story was made into an animated TV series in 1999 and was followed by an anime version of her other hit series, Full Moon o Sagashite (Searching for the Full Moon) in 2002.

Tanemura-sensei loves karaoke and sang a song on the Full Moon anime CD.

Story Summary:

15-year old Haine comes from a complicated past. Her once well-to-do family 'sold' her to the Otomiya family in exchange for a 50 million-yen business loan. On top of that, her brief stint as a juvenile delinquent in middle school has tainted her reputation in her new school, the elite Imperial Academy.

Haine also has another secret: She has a major crush on Shizumasa Togu, a.k.a. "The Emperor." Shizumasa is the student council president and she's been in love with him from afar since she was a little girl.

Like the Japanese Emperor, Shizumasa is treated with complete reverence and is kept shielded from the chattering masses. The only people who have unrestricted access to his company is the student council, the crème de la crème of this elite school.

Through a series of wacky circumstances, Haine finds herself appointed to the council as the bodyguard for the Emperor – but can she protect herself from the complex web of intrigue surrounding the student council and protect her heart from the Shizumasa's stern demeanor and slightly manipulative ways?

Main Characters

Haine Otomiya
A cheerful, hard-working teen, Haine is the adopted daughter of the Otomiya family, a once-wealthy family that has fallen on rough times. Her brush with life as a middle-school juvenile delinquent has tainted her reputation at the elite Imperial Academy, but it has also given her the courage to stand up and fight whenever anyone dear to her is threatened. Slightly ditzy at times but loyal and brave, Haine will need all her inner strength to melt the ice-cold shell surrounding her true love, Shizumasa, the Emperor.

Shizumasa Togu
Stern, serious and mysterious, Shizumasa is known as The Emperor, the leader of the student council. Shizumasa once wrote and published a children's book at an early age, and his book so impressed Haine that she fell in love with him through his writing. He also appeared to her in her troubled middle school years and encouraged her to turn her life around – so why is he so cold and distant to Haine now that they've met once more at the Imperial Academy?

Ushio Amamiya
Aloof, pretty Ushio constantly dwells under a grey cloud – but only smiles (begrudgingly) when she's around her best friend, Haine. Blasé about love and school, Ushio is nicknamed "Lady Hydrangea," for her inscrutable beauty.

Maguri Tsujimiya
Arrogant and fiercely protective of Shizumasa, Maguri is a member of the Imperial Academy student council and often acts as Shizumasa's trusted lieutenant. He's a stickler for the Academy's arcane system of social hierarchy and distrusts Haine's entry into the council – but rumor has it that he's also Shizumasa's lover.

Maora
Perky, friendly and just a bit eccentric, Maora is also a member of the student council and is considered the "brains" of the group. She has an incredible memory for details and probably does really well in school, but her upbeat nature and her pet, an alien-like miniature sheep makes her seem a little, well… odd.
