Evolving out of Viz Communications' prior attempts to create a manga anthology magazine, PULP: The Manga Magazine made its debut in 1997. PULP tried to differentiate itself from the competition by focusing on edgier, avant-garde content and sophisticated manga storytelling geared toward mature audiences. The problem was that the word "adult" in a comic store usually means "porno" (which PULP wasn't) and issues were often displayed in the nether regions of comic stores. The last issue of PULP was released in August 2002.
