Takaya-sensei made her professional debut in 1992, and has since created several popular series for Hana to Yume magazine, including Fruits Basket, Phantom Dream (Genei Muso), Those With Wings (Tsubasa o Motsu Mono) and her current series, Hoshi wa Utau (The Stars Sing)
In addition to drawing manga, Takaya-sensei loves playing video games, especially Final Fantasy.
Tohru Honda has her share of family problems. Her parents are dead and her relatives don't want to take her in. Nevertheless, Tohru remains an eternally cheerful student.
When she moves in with the very rich Sohma family, Tohru is in for some surprises. Tohru finds herself living with Yuki, the popular 'prince' of her class, and Yuki's cousins, irritable Kyo and eccentric Shigure. She also discovers the Sohma family's secret: thirteen of them are possessed by the spirits of the zodiac. If they hug someone of the opposite sex, they transform into an animal. But that's just one of many secrets of this cursed clan....
Always cheerful Tohru is a hard-working girl who desperately wants to complete high school to fulfill her promise to her now deceased mother. Easily flustered by the many surprises she encounters while living with the Sohmas, Tohru transforms the dysfunctional family with her positive outlook and her growing affection for Yuki and Kyo.
Almost too pretty to be a boy, Yuki is the 'prince' of the school who is widely admired by his female (and male!) classmates. But despite his popularity, Yuki is standoffish for a simple reason: If any girl hugs him, he'll transform into a rat.
Irritable and always itching for a fight, Kyo is the cat of the Sohma clan, representing the one animal that was left out of the celestial banquet. Kyo is the scapegoat of the family, and he harbors an intense rivalry with Yuki, the rat. According to legend, the rat tricked the cat into missing the banquet and sealed the cat's fate as the least fortunate of zodiac animals.
Shigure is the dog of the Sohma clan, and he's several years older than Kyo and Yuki. He's the main adult residing where Yuki, Kyo and now Tohru live, and he's a published author. Shigure is a flirt who loves to tease his cousins, but behind his smiling face, he's also a manipulative person who has many secrets.
In the Sohma zodiac, there are 13 family members possessed by animal spirits, and one who is the embodiment of the "god" who hosted the celestial banquet. Akito is the 'god' of the Sohma clan; the volatile, imperious and erratic head of the family who holds absolute physical and emotional power over the other members of the zodiac.
