NY Times Manga Bestsellers: A Puzzling Pokemon Debut

By February 25, 2012

Follow me on:

Pokemon Adventures Diamond Pearl Platinum Volume 4Topping the chart on this week's New York Times Graphic Books Manga Bestseller List are a foursome of Shonen Jump titles: Bleach, Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's, Bakuman and Blue Exorcist.

That's not too surprising, and neither is seeing the latest volume of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys making its debut in the top 10 at the #5 spot or historical romance The Story of Saiunkoku at #6 . However, there was one entry in this week's New York Times Manga Top 10 that made me scratch my head a bit: The mysterious "return" of Pokemon Adventures Diamond and Pearl Platinum Volume 3.

Why was this so strange? Well, Pokemon Adventures Diamond and Pearl Platinum Volume 3 last made an appearance in the top of the charts in mid-October 2011, when it first hit the shelves. Meanwhile, given that Pokemon Adventures Diamond and Pearl Adventures Volume 4 went on sale on February 7, 2012, it would stand to reason (well, at least to ME) that this was actually what should be at the #6 spot this week. Feel free to disagree, but that's kind of what my gut tells me, based on observing past trends in this weekly sales report.

In the big scheme of things, this aberration isn't terribly important. But it's things like this (and ugh, the weeks that they had entries for "The Bleach" that sometimes makes me wonder if anyone is really paying attention over there.

Here's the rest of the New York Times Graphic Books Manga Top 10 for March 4, 2012, reflecting sales for the week ending February 18, 2012.
