With the AX: Alternative Manga anthology coming this summer, it seems appropriate to take a closer look at some manga that push the limits of the medium. One artist that definitely goes beyond the usual manga fare is Takashi Nemoto, a contributor to the AX anthology and the creator of Monster Men Bureiko Lullaby, an almost indescribably strange collection of short stories from Picturebox Inc.
Guest reviewer Shaenon Garrity takes a peek between the covers, and finds that this collection of heta-uma (bad-good) manga is full of "all of the worst things in the world," but she also finds it worthy of a 4-star rating. See why in her review of Monster Men Bureiko Lullaby, and see what makes it both "bad" and "good."Also, check out a discussion of indie manga, including Monster Men Bureiko Lullaby, featuring Picturebox publisher Dan Nadel as he talks about some of the challenges of trying to promote cutting edge manga in North America.
