For the second time in as many months, five new volumes of One Piece by Eiichiro Oda have claimed half of the spots in this week's New York Times Graphic Books Bestseller List. With only one more month of five-volumes-at-once releases to go, One Piece fans will soon be (almost) caught up with fans in Japan.
Also new and notable: the fourth volume of Black Bird by Kanako Sakurakoji makes its debut in the #1 slot, and the Twilight graphic novel reclaims the #1 spot in the hardcover top 10 after two weeks in the #2 slot, thus confirming that supernatural romances are as hot as ever.
The other odd factoid about this week's NYT Graphic Books Top 10 list? This is the first time in the 62 weeks that this list has been in existence that a volume of Naruto is not in the top 10. Amazing.
It feels a little sad that this week's NY Times list is dominated by eight VIZ Media releases after news of massive layoffs at their San Francisco offices this past Tuesday. Here's hoping that all affected VIZ staffers find a good place to land in what is turning out to be a tough time for the manga publishing biz.
