Manga Review: Deadman Wonderland's a Twisted Thrill-Ride

Deadman Wonderland Vol. 1If you've ever seen a Japanese game show, you've probably been amazed at the kind of pain and humiliation contestants are willing to endure to win a game. But that's nothing compared to what 14-year old Ganta Igarashi is put through when he's sent to the world most twisted theme-park/prison, Deadman Wonderland.

Set in a somewhat far-fetched version of the future, Deadman Wonderland is a new shonen manga series by Eureka Seven creators Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou about a teen who gets sent to a prison where the inmates compete in deadly sports competitions to entertain tourists. Think of it as a shonen manga version of Rollerball, Deathmatch 5000 and the The Shawshank Redemption whipped through a food processor. Yep, it's a strange mix, but somehow it works!

Check out my review of Deadman Wonderland Volume 1 from TokyoPop and find out what makes this twisted tale a thrill ride worth experiencing.

Deadman Wonderland is one of the four picks I highlighted on Robot 6's What Are You Reading column, and one of the 25 most anticipated manga of 2010. Intrigued by this story? You can read an online preview at TokyoPop.com or check out the video trailer at TokyoPop's YouTube channel.
