Lately, it seems like vampires are the hot literary genre of the moment, as fans' thirst for bloodsucking romance and drama seems almost unquenchable. The same goes for manga, as it seems like there's rarely a week that there isn't at least one vampire-related title on the New York Times graphic books top 10.
One recent entry to the vampire manga bookshelf is Bloody Kiss, a romantic comedy about a spunky gal, an anemic boy vampire and his androgynous vampire servant. Like the human - vampire couple in those bestselling vampire novels, the teen vampire guy would sooner wilt than take blood from his girlfriend without permission. However, unlike said famous teen vampire - human couple, Bloody Kiss' young lovers Kiyo and Kuroboshi generally spend more time bickering than making goo-goo eyes at each other.
Take a peek at my review of Bloody Kiss Volume 1 by Kazuko Furumiya from TokyoPop and see if this not-quite-Gothic series can satisfy vampire fans' hunger for romance, or if it's just looking for laughs. You'll also find out what this new shojo manga title has in common with Fruits Basket. Want more? Take a peek at the online preview of the first chapter of Bloody Kiss at TokyoPop.com.
I've also updated my list of vampire manga, so now it's got 21 titles for your reading pleasure.
