When TokyoPop announced that they'd be publishing Karakuri Odette by Julietta Suzuki as part of their Fall 2009 manga line-up, I'll admit that I didn't have very high expectations. A story about a teenage girl android who attends high school but doesn't quite get the subtleties of human behavior sounded like a classic set-up for some goofy, mindless comedy. Boy, was I wrong.
As I read (and re-read) this new shojo sci-fi series, I was pleasantly surprised by its gently humorous tone and inventive twists. Suzuki could have opted to portray Odette as a mechanical bimbo, but instead created a genuinely likeable teen robot who is more human than she thinks.
