From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: Star-Bulletin anime and manga columnist Jason Yadao announced the upcoming release of The Rough Guide to Manga, a paperback introduction to the wonderful world of Japanese comics that was written by Yadao himself. This 304-page illustrated guide promises a list of 50 must-read manga, tips for "decoding" manga and a glossary of commonly used terms.
According to Amazon.com and the Penguin USA website, The Rough Guide to Manga is due out in September 21, 2009 -- although Yadao hints that the book's release has been pushed out to "early October" in his column for unspecified reasons.
So what else can you expect from this book? Here's the scoop from Yadao:
"What you'll learn from this book is what I learned over a two-year writing process: the history of manga, a look at what makes manga what it is, and profiles of key people, publishers and resources in the industry. At the center of it all is what the Rough Guides people call the Canon, my picks for 50 must-read series that are certain to spawn feverish debates on Internet forums."
London-based Rough Guides is best known for their travel guides, which offer a no-nonsense, word from the wise approach to seeing the world. But they have also been publishing maps, phrasebooks and introductory guide books to various timely topics including their recently released Rough Guide to Anime by Simon Richmond, and Rough Guide to Graphic Novels by Danny Fingeroth.
So congrats to fellow manga blogger and Hawaii journalist Jason Yadao on the upcoming release of his new book! Look for it at your favorite bookstore or comic shop soon.
