While the running controversy at San Diego Comic-Con is about how (gasp!) girls are invading the hallowed ground of comics and sci-fi fandom, a recent announcement from Digital Manga Publishing reminded us of an upcoming event where femme fans rule the roost. DMP announced this week that popular and prolific manga artist Makoto Tateno will be their special guest at Yaoi-Con 2009.
Yaoi-Con is the longest-running fan convention dedicated to boys love manga, anime and artwork. It's held annually in the San Francisco Bay Area, and this year's event will be held at the same venue as last year, at the Marriott San Mateo-San Francisco Airport on Halloween weekend, from Friday October 30 through Sunday, November 1, 2009.
This will be Tateno-sensei's first visit to Yaoi-Con, and she'll be there to promote several new and upcoming releases from Digital Manga Publishing (with descriptions courtesy of DMP):
- Happy Boys Volume 1 - Doki Doki / DMP - September, 23 2009
"At the butler café, Lady Braganza, the five apprentice butlers known as the Happy Boys have been waiting for you! It's their mission to bring happiness to the ladies who visit the café and to become the perfect butler. The ladies happiness is their happiness. Happy Boys was recently made into a Japanese television live-action comedy series." - Yellow Omnibus Edition - June Manga / DMP - November 18, 2009
"Taki and Goh share just about everything – their apartment in the city, their job as elite drug “snatchers” and even dinner duty. But hot Goh wants to go much deeper undercover with his gorgeous partner. Too bad Taki doesn’t swing that way…or does he? If yellow is the warning color, will this team finally end up in-the-red (and in bed)? Boys will be boys, and the hot guys of Yellow are no exception. An illicit thrill-ride from cover to cover, this hip drama turns up the heat on every page and guarantees to get your heart fired-up! Back by popular demand, this limited edition omnibus collects volumes 1 and 2 of the original series, with some unseen artwork and unpublished content!" - How to Capture a Martini - Doki Doki / DMP December 16, 2009
"He was my lover in High school, my upperclassman, beautiful, malicious Shinobu. He was also the one who took away everything, whether it was my first kiss, or my first time. Then, after the graduation ceremony, he completely disappeared. Four years have passed since then, and right when I thought I’d already forgotten all memories about him, he suddenly appeared in front of my eyes, more beautiful and charming than ever… Now, even though he’s willing to open his body for everyone, the only thing he gives me is his cruel words. But no matter what, I still want to be by his side… So I started working a part-time job at the bar where he’s working…"
Tateno-sensei joins a great roster of special guests who are already confirmed to appear at Yaoi-Con 2009, including Haruka Minami, Yaoi Press publisher and author Yamilla Abraham, and artists Jo Chen and Yayoi Neko. Find out more about these Yaoi-Con guests.
I missed last year's show thanks to a schedule conflict, but you can get a taste of what's in store at this year's show by taking a peek at my photo gallery from Yaoi-Con 2007.
