Anime Expo 2009: Thursday's Manga Highlights

Thursday July 2, 2009

I’ve been talking about it for weeks – but now it’s finally time for Anime Expo to begin! As you read this, thousands of anime, manga, gaming and Japanese pop music fans are converging on the Los Angeles Convention Center for four solid days and three nights of concerts, cosplay, comics and near-constant anime showings. So what’s worth seeing and doing today? Here’s my manga-centric list of Thursday’s highlights.

THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2009
Day One of Anime Expo kicks off bright and early at 9:00 am with the opening ceremonies. Then after that, it’s a full day of fun as manga artist Yun Kouga, visual-kei goth rock band Moi dix Mois , cheery pop supergroup Morning Musume and a showing of two Gurren Lagann features, including the “Making of” documentary that they first showcased at Fanime 2009.

  • 9:00 am - 9:50 am: Opening Ceremonies, Main Events Hall LACC Hall A
The fun kicks off bright and early Thursday morning as Anime Expo gives fans a chance to see what’s in store, and get a few opening words from the all-star group of anime directors, manga artists, actors, game creators and pop/rock stars from Japan and beyond. You need to have a press or industry badge to get into this panel.
