Want to break into the comics biz? Portland, Oregon-based publisher Oni Press recently announced an open call for comics and manga artists to show off their skills in the 2009 Oni Press Talent Search. But rather than just look through portfolios at comic conventions, Oni Press is doing things a little differently: They're giving aspiring artists a choice of three professionally-written scripts to illustrate to show off their graphic storytelling skills.

The three scripts offer a variety of story styles that will hopefully intrigue and challenge a variety of artists. You can view the scripts in PDF format via the links below (Requires Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat to view)

  • Supernatural comedy titled Our Hero by Philip Gelatt, writer of Labor Days, and Indiana Jones Adventures.
  • Espionage thriller titled Cold City by Antony Johnson, writer of Wasteland and the Dead Space video game series. (Johnson is also the scribe behind the Del Rey Manga X-Men manga remix, Wolverine: Prodigal Son with Wilson Tortosa)
  • Western drama titled Medicine Show by Frank Beaton, writer of various short stories appearing in This is a Souvenir, Outlaw Territory, 24/Seven and others.

While Oni Press doesn't consider itself to be a "manga" publisher, it does publish graphic novels by several very successful comics creators whose work is strongly influenced by manga, including Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Blue Monday by Chyna Clugston, to name just a few.

Artists can submit their entries in two ways:

IN PERSON at San Diego Comic-Con International, from July 23 - 26, 2009 at the San Diego Convention Center

  • In order to guarantee a portfolio review appointment with an Oni editor during regular convention hours you will need to illustrate one or more of the three scripts provided.
  • In addition to presenting the original art at the review session, interested parties must also bring with them 8 Ĺ"x11" photocopies of both penciled art and inked art for Oni Press to keep as reference.
  • Each photocopied page should include the artistís name, phone number, and e-mail address.
  • The samples are preferred in a manila envelope that also includes the artistís name and contact information in the address line.

BY MAIL, before the submission deadline of AUGUST 15, 2009

  • Submissions must be mailed to:
    ONI PRESS TALENT SEARCH 2009
1305 SE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite A
    Portland, OR 97214
  • Mailed submissions should be submitted in a manila envelope and include 8 ĹĒx11″ photocopies of both penciled art and inked art for Oni Press to keep as reference.
  • Each photocopied page should include the artistís name, phone number, and e-mail address.
  • Submitters will get an e-mail response from Oni Press in three to six months.
