Usually, when a store decides they want to commemorate "Asian Heritage Month," they have some dancing, some cooking demonstrations and maybe an art exhibit. Thanks to TokyoPop, Macy's is taking a more contemporary approach to celebrating Asian culture -- they're having a Fruits Basket festival!

On Friday, May 15 and Saturday May 16, 2009, three Macy's stores in New York City and Washington D.C. will be holding special events designed to attract and delight current fans of Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket and hopefully, introduce new readers to this shojo manga sensation that has consistently topped the bestseller lists.

Fans who attend this Fruits Basket-themed event will have a chance to enter a costume contest to win a Furuba prize pack, including Fruits Basket Sticker Collection, a day planner, t-shirt, hat and more schwag. Anyone making a $100 or more purchase at Macy's will receive a copy of Fruits Basket Ultimate Edition Vol. 1, a Fruits Basket DVD and a Fruits Basket: Cat fan book. And everyone will have a chance to have their picture taken in front of a Fruits Basket photo backdrop.

The events will be held on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, 2009. Here's the details:

Friday, May 15, 2009, starting at 2:00 pm
Macy's Flushing (in Queens)
136-50 Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing, NY 11354
(on the Main Floor)

Saturday, May 16, 2009, starting at 2:00 pm
Macy's Herald Square

151 West 34th Street, New York, NY 10001
(on the 7th floor in the Children's section)

Saturday, 5/16, starting at 2:00 pm
Macy's Downtown Metro Center

1201 G. Street N.W., Washington, DC, 20005
(on the Main Floor)

So get out there and show that Asian pop culture pride! If you're living in the area and check it out, do add your comments on how it went and what it was like.

Hi! Glad to hear that you like Fruits Basket. As far as I know, these NY and DC events are the only ones that were scheduled. But I’ll let the folks at TokyoPop know that you’d like to see something like this in your town. :)
