In case you haven't been near a comic shop lately, this Saturday, May 2, 2009 is Free Comic Book Day! It's that very special time of the year when comic shops from coast-to-coast open up their doors to young and old and offer them a taste of comic book joy for free, with several special sampler comics that are only available through this event. There isn't much manga being offered this year, but one exception is the Shonen Jump sampler from VIZ Media, which will feature an excerpt from Ultimo, the cross-cultural comics collaboration between comics legend Stan Lee and Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei.
After a preview appeared in the pages of Shonen Jump last year, Ultimo will be joining the regular line-up monthly in Shonen Jump magazine starting from the July 2009 issue, when it replaces Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo by Yoshio Sawai.
Supplies of the Shonen Jump sampler are limited and will vary from store to store, so find out which comic shop near you is participating in Free Comic Book Day with this handy comic shop locator and make plans to get there early for best selection.
Find out the other cool comics you may be able to pick up at Free Comic Book Day, and check this events listing to learn more about creator signings and other special happenings scheduled at your local shops.
