There isn't a lot of Chinese manhua available in English in the U.S., but that has been changing lately with the arrival of several new titles from TokyoPop and Yen Press. One of the most eye-catching arrivals is Orange, a full-color one-shot graphic novel by Benjamin, neé Bin Zhang.
Orange is the first of two titles from Benjamin due out from TokyoPop, with Remember to follow in June. Orange is a different breed of graphic novel from TokyoPop: it's got bigger pages, it's slimmer and it's printed in dazzling color from cover to cover.
But don't let its bright colors fool you. Orange is a dark story about an angry, alienated teen living in modern day China. Disappointed by her parents, friends and so-called boyfriends, Orange (yes, that's her name) decides to end it all by throwing herself off a building. Then she meets a strange young man who tries to convince her that she has more reasons to live than she thinks.
Check out my review of Orange by Benjamin from TokyoPop and see if this Chinese creator is poised to give his Japanese and Korean counterparts a run for their money, or if he's still got a ways to go. Also, check out the other 19 most anticipated manga of 2009 and other new and upcoming releases from TokyoPop.
