So you say you crave something new to read, but cringe at the thought of shelling out $10 to $12 bucks a pop to try a new series? Torrance, California-based Aurora Publishing is offering manga fans a blow-out sale of their current and recent releases from their shojo manga-centric Aurora imprint, their yaoi manga Deux Press imprint and their hot manga for ladies from Luv Luv. If you order now, directly from Aurora, you can get any current title published prior to January 2009 for only $4.00. Newer releases from the last two months including Tengu-Jin and Love Round!! are available for only $8.00.

If you love the kind of manga that Aurora, Deux Press and Luv Luv have been putting out over the past two years, then it's worth your while to support this relatively new manga publisher during what is admittedly a tough time for all book-related businesses, big and small.

To take advantage of this deal, send an email to Elisa Tung at e-tung@aurora-publishing.com to place your order. There's no expiration date on this deal -- it'll be going on as long as supplies last, or until Aurora says otherwise. Aurora accepts PayPal, credit card payments or money orders.

Need a few recommendations on what to buy? If you're a yaoi manga fan (or even if you're just looking for something new), I highly recommend picking up Seduce Me After the Show and Red Blinds the Foolish by est em. Both feature some stylish, sophisticated art with lyrical storytelling about men (not boys) in nuanced and sensual scenarios. Even if men making out with men is not your thing, these two stand-alone collections of short stories will impress any fan who love manga as an art-form.

Future Lovers by Saika Kunieda is also a fun romantic comedy /drama about a straight teacher who discovers that his first one-night stand with a guy was with his school's new art teacher. This slice-of-life story is filled with likeable characters who do more than just get it on.

If you enjoy Paradise Kiss or Nana by Ai Yazawa, you might also like Walkin' Butterfly by Chihiro Tamaki. This fashionable josei manga drama focuses on Michiko, a tall and rambunctious tomboy and her efforts to become a world-class model.

If you're looking for more sizzle than shojo manga has to offer, sample some of the sexy josei manga from Luv Luv. These titles feature young women and some hunky guys goin' all the way to show their love for each other. Some recent releases worth checking out include 2008 Readers' Poll winner for the Best New Josei Manga Object of Desire, or Love for Dessert and Sounds of Love.

Have you read other Aurora / Deux Press / Luv Luv titles you can recommend to your fellow manga fans? Add your comments below. You can also visit Aurora, Deux Press and Luv Luv to see what else they have to offer. Many titles include free online previews, so you can get a taste of the stories you're picking up. Happy bargain hunting!

Diamond seems to be screwing up regularly with orders of the various Aurora imprints at my local comics shop lately. When I tried to order “Red Blinds the Foolish” via my LCS in February, it look something like three weeks to arrive, even though the book had come out a couple of months before. I reserved Hinako Takanaga’s “Love Round” when it was released by Deux three Wednesdays ago, but Diamond shorted my LCS on the order (if they sent them any copies at all), and they still haven’t sent them any more.

At this point, I’m beginning to wonder whether they ever will, especially since Diamond never managed to provide the copy of the Deux Press title “Ruff Love” that I tried to order through my LCS in August. After two months of waiting, I just gave up and picked it up at Borders.

I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t even buy from the local bookstores anymore. I just order what I want online. The local bookstores are exasperating to deal with, given the selection they opt to display on their limited shelfspace. It’s usually less expensive ordering it online (even with shipping), as well.
