Want to Work in Manga? TokyoPop Seeks Manga Editor

After several months of layoff news in the publishing biz, a new (paying, full-time) job opening at a manga publisher is noteworthy stuff. From Publishers Marketplace, and confirmed by a visit to TokyoPop's job seekers' page, this Los Angeles-based publishing company is looking to hire a manga editor.

The job description is looking for a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed editorial professional "To guide the selection, creation, development, and marketing of licensed manga products." There's also a laundry list of job duties, including (but not limited to):

  • Coordinate the marketing of manga series through online, viral, consumer marketing, and events-based tactics, to maximize sales of existing manga brands & expand reach and customer awareness.

  • Write catalog, jacket, and marketing copy; strong verbal and written communication skills, a willingness to develop strong market knowledge through research and field experience and the ability to work independently via strong goal orientation.
  • Supervise manga translation, rewriting, layout and correction
But before you brush up your resume, you should check that you can speak and read Japanese, have a minimum of two years experience in the publishing biz, have a college degree and (very important) a "positive, can-do attitude."

Still interested? Then send your salary history and resume to careers@tokyopop.com, with "Manga Editor" in the subject line of your email. Don't call their offices, because that'll annoy 'em, and you know that's generally a bad idea when you're applying for a job. Good luck!
