Go to DMC! No, not Run DMC, DMC as in Detroit Metal City , the outrageously funny and raunchy heavy metal manga by Kiminori Wakasugi. DMC is just one of the 24 new manga featured in this 2009 new manga preview gallery, featuring cover art, release dates and plot summaries of upcoming graphic novels from VIZ Media.
Originally published in Young Animal magazine, Detroit Metal City is already a huge hit in Japan, where it has inspired an anime series, a live-action movie and a record label. Only Japan could give us a whacked-out story about a emo dweeb with a bowl haircut who has a secret life as the lead singer for a visual kei death metal band. When I went to Japan this past summer, I saw posters for the DMC movie, anime and manga every where! Will the USA go nuts for DMC too? We'll find out in June 2009, when Detroit Metal City Volume 1 debuts in U.S. bookstores and comic shops.
In addition to DMC, VIZ has also recently announced other buzz-worthy titles from favorite manga-ka, including Ooku by Fumi Yoshinaga (creator of Antique Bakery and Flower of Life), Black Bird by Kanako Sakurakouji (creator of Backstage Prince), Rasetsu by Chika Shiomi (creator of Yurara and Canon) and Children of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi (whose work was featured in Japan As Seen by 17 Creators).
