Daily Yomiuri reporter Jin Kiyokawa recently spoke with manga artist Takehiko Inoue about the recent release of Real Volume 8 in Japan. In the interview, Inoue-sensei talks about his hopes to tell a different kind of story that's about more than just basketball:
"It would be meaningless to take up this theme if I kept it superficial...I think I'm still finding out what I should express," Inoue said.Check out the rest of the interview, then see what you're missing with my review of Real Volume 1 from VIZ Signature / VIZ Media.
"What you absolutely must avoid doing is to simply link disabilities in general with wheelchair basketball. It will invite a cry of, 'That's not the way it is,'" Inoue said.
"I'm less and less thinking I have to do this or that to entertain readers. I'm thinking I just should express what I should," he said.
