Parco Shibuya Celebrates Tezuka's 80th Birthday With Tribute Exhibit
From The Daily Yomiuri and The Mainichi Daily News: To celebrate what would have been Osamu Tezuka's 80th birthday, the Shibuya branch of Parco department store hosted a group art show featuring 35 artists' re-interpretations of characters and artwork from the Godfather of Manga. The exhibit, titled "Tezuka Gene: Light in the Darkness" is on display until November 10, 2008 and it features Black Jack, Pinoko, Princess Sapphire, and of course Astro Boy as you've never seen them before.
From Lego sculptures to a painting that reimagines Black Jack as a sultry surgeon seductress, the exhibit includes a variety of mediums and approaches to the subject. The Mainichi Daily News has a great photo gallery of shots from the show, while Daily Yomiuri reporter Tom Baker provides a bit more background detail on some of the artists in his write-up.
And just for fun, check out this gallery of images by Tezuka to compare and contrast the work of this manga master with the artists who have paid tribute to his creations.
