Man Petitions to Marry Character from Haruhi Suzumiya Manga

Tuesday November 4, 2008

From Monsters and Critics and The Daily Telegraph comes the report that a Japanese man has launched an online petition to be allowed to marry his favorite manga character, Asahina Mikuru from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. According to various wire reports, Taichi Takashita has already gathered over 1,200 signatures on his online petition to make his manga marriage a reality.

As one of the stars of the popular Haruhi Suzumiya manga, light novels and anime series, Asahina is a busty time-traveling, maid-outfit-wearing character who is a favorite of the otaku set. Nevertheless, Takashita is probably the first guy to go so far as to publically proclaim his desire to turn his obssession into a legally-sanctioned relationship.

His rationale? Well, according to his petition, Takashita wrote:

"I am no longer interested in three dimensions. I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world. However, that seems impossible with present-day technology. Therefore, at the very least, would it be possible to legally authorise marriage with a two-dimensional character?"
The Japanese government's answer to Takashita's rhetorical question will probably be "no" -- but since he brought it up, which manga character would you marry if you could? While I'm not really the marryin' kind, my favorite manga hunks are Shuri from Basara, Musashi from Eyeshield 21 and Ren from Skip Beat! Which characters are on your list of fictional would-be fiancees? Add 'em in the comments below!

For me, it’d be a toss up between Tohsaka Rin and Matou Sakura from Fate/stay night. It’s just too hard to pick; I might as well just toss a coin.

Wow that is so cool. Can’t the Japanese government give way a little? That would be the dream of anime fans all over the world!!!I don’t mind marrying Loki from Matantei Loki Ragnarok or Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Though not anywhere near as serious as this guy is, I’ll have to go with Hisui from Tsukihime or Sakura from Fate. There are many characters I like and some that I like more but not all of them are as good “wife” material.
