Fanime 2008: Saturday's Manga Highlights and Events

By , About.com GuideMay 24, 2008

Follow me on:

Day Two of Fanime promises to be packed with lots to see and do. Here's some of the manga-centric highlights of the day:

  • 6 am - 8 am: Detective Conan Movie: The Private Eye's Requiem, Video Room 1, SJCC A4-A5. Also known as Case Closed from the VIZ Media manga edition, Detective Conan follows the adventures of a teen detective who's stuck in the body of a boy.
  • 7 am - 8 am: Vampire Knight Anime Episodes 1-2, Video Main Room, SJCC Room A1-A8. Get a sneak peek at the as yet unreleased in the U.S. anime version of Matsuri Hino's high school goth drama, Vampire Knight.
  • 10 am - 11 am: Doraemon: Nobita's Monster, Video Room 1 SJCC Room A4-A5. Check out the adventures of Japan's official anime ambassador, since >kaf< you can't find this robot cat's manga in English.
  • 11 am - noon: Aimee Major Steinberger Presents Japan Ai, Panel Room 2 - San Carlos. Animator, cosplayer, doll collector and author of Japan Ai: A Tall Girl's Adventures in Japan Aimee Major Steinberger will talk about her infectiously fun, sketch-filled travel diary, and perhaps share a few stories about her adventures.
  • 1 pm - 2 pm: Broccoli Books, Panel Room 2 - San Carlos. Broccoli will be showing off some of their new and current releases for both their Broccoli Books imprint and their Boysenberry Books boys love imprint.
  • 2 pm - 3 pm: Dark Horse Manga, Panel Room 1 - Hilton Ballroom. Dark Horse Manga Editor Carl Horn will show off some of the new and upcoming manga coming out this year, and maybe, juuuuust maybe, he'll spill a few more details about that Clamp "mangettes" project that we've been talking about since last summer.
  • 3 pm - 4 pm: Spotlight on Manga Artist Maika Netsu, Panel Room 1 - Hilton Ballroom. FanimeCon special guest Maika Netsu, the artist of My Dearest Devil Princess from Broccoli Books will be on hand to talk about her work, and perhaps share some details about her current series, Kapreka.
  • 6:30 pm - 11 pm: Fanime Masquerade, Main Events Civic Auditorium. You've seen them wandering the halls in costume, now see the Fanime cosplayers put on a show! With 65 groups scheduled to show their stuff, be prepared for a looong night of skits, eye-popping costumes and in-jokes that only an otaku would find hilarious.
  • 6 pm - 8 pm: How to Talk to Girls, Panel Room 1, Hilton Ballroom. Okay, this one scares me. Let me break it down so you can check out the masquerade instead. 1) Try to smell clean and brush your teeth. 2) Say hi. 3) Ask her a question. 4) Listen to the answer. 5) Smile. Laugh at her jokes. 6) Ask a follow-up question. 7) Listen, smile, talk, repeat. And don't forget that all-important eye contact. Now was that so hard?
