While most Bay Area folks will be firing up the grill and soaking up some sun, the rest of us will be at FanimeCon 2008 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose. Kicking off with opening ceremonies at 3 pm today, FanimeCon promises a full weekend of anime, manga, cosplay and J-Pop culture fun. Here's a few of Friday's highlights:
- 10 am - 3 pm: Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei anime marathon, Video Room 3 - Get an early peek at Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei before Del Rey Manga publishes the manga in early 2009.
- 3 pm - 4 pm: Opening ceremonies at Stage Zero. Get a taste of the weekend's schedule with a preview of the videos, special guest appearances and more.
- 4 pm - 5 pm: The Death Note Conversations, Panel Room 2 San Carlos. Your guess is as good as mine as to what this'll be. A bunch of folks debating whether L or Light was the "good guy"? Misa wanna-be's exchanging make-up tips? People complaining that the movie isn't as good as the manga? Drop by and find out.
- 5 pm - 6 pm: J-Culture in Anime and Manga with Giles Poitras, Panel Room 2 San Carlos. The author of The Anime Companion and The Anime Companion 2, and contributing writer for Otaku USA magazine will explain some of the finer (and quirkier) aspects of Japanese culture as seen in manga and anime.
- 5 pm - 6 pm: Manga: More Than Ninjas, Panel Room 3, Santa Clara. Well, duh.
- 8 pm - Yaoi Bingo sponsored by Yaoi-Con, Video Room 1. The folks who bring you the Bay Area's premier yaoi manga and anime convention bring some of their boys love mayhem to San Jose with Yaoi Bingo. I'm not exactly sure what happens here, but given that you have to be 17 or over to check it out, I'm sure it's pretty saucy.
- 8:30 pm to 1 am - Swap Meet, Exhibit Hall 2. Browse and buy gently used anime, manga, games and goodies from your fellow fans.
- 9 pm - 10 pm: All Mangaka Are Perverts, Panel Room 1, Hilton Ballroom. Another mysterious panel; perhaps it's a scholarly examination of fanservice? Or finally an explanation for why nosebleeds are naughty? Please, someone go to this and tell me what it's about.
- 10 - 11 pm: Intro to Yuri and Shojo Ai, Panel Room 2, San Carlos. Get introduced to manga and anime about girls who love girls.
