New Sneak Peek at Ultimo Manga, More Comic-Con Cosplay

Thursday April 24, 2008

Just a quick wrap-up from the Stan Lee / Ultimo event from last week's New York Comic-Con. I got a hold of a copy of Jump SQ II, and it's a treat to see some of the Hiroyuki Takei's manga illustrations as well as several Shonen Jump manga artists drawing their take on Lee's creations, Spiderman, Iron Man and more. If you have a chance, pick up a copy at your nearest Japanese bookshop, because it's worth it just for these color illustrations alone.

Just for fun, I added one of the color spreads from Ultimo to my New York Comic-Con Photo Gallery, featuring what looks like the creation of Ultimo and Vice, the two robots with mysterious origins and even more mysterious reasons for fighting with each other. Biggest mystery for me so far? Ultimo (the red-headed one) is supposed to be a boy?! Whaa? Was I the only one who thought that character was female? Darn you, general trend toward male androgyny in shonen manga!

Also newly added to the gallery -- more photos featuring some of the winners from the Cosclips.com costume/cosplay contest, some cool toys and more scenes from the Javits Center floor. Enjoy!

Ahhh, I totally want to see that pullout with the manga artists’ takes on the Marvel characters!!! Where can I find imports of Japanese manga magazines in the Twin Cities???
