NY Comic-Con: Friday's Manga /Anime Highlights

The first day of New York Comic-Con kicks into gear on Friday at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. While most of the action is focused on superheroes and sci-fi, there's a good deal of manga / anime events worth checking out today, including:

  • 1:00 - 2:00 pm - State of the Manga Industry Panel, Room 1E16. Representatives from top manga publishers will be on hand to talk about where they're at, and where they think the manga biz is going in the months and years to come.
  • 2:00 - 3:00 pm - Mobile Comics & Manga Panel, Room 1E07. Reps from TokyoPop, GoComics and Mirage will talk about what they hope will be the next big frontier for comics consumption: your cell phone.
  • 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Stan Lee / Ultimo Manga Press Event - This invitation-only event will be when legendary comics creator Stan Lee, Jump SQ. editor Takanori Asada and Shonen Jump Editor-in-Chief Marc Weidenbaum reveal this hot cross-cultural comics collaboration between Lee and Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei.
  • 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Beyond Shounen and Shoujo: Japan's Indie Manga Scene, Room 1E16. Writer Sean Michael Wilson will show off the more grown-up and artistically innovative side to manga, with a look at the indie and alternative manga-ka on the cutting edge.
  • 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Bleach Anime Spotlight, Room 1E15. VIZ Media will be presenting two episodes of the shonen action anime series currently featured on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line-up.
  • 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Princess Ai Spotlight, TokyoPop booth 1321. TokyoPop editors Lillian Diaz-Pryzbyl and Steve Buccellato, creator of Princess Ai: Encounters and Princess Ai: Rumors from the Other Side talk about their plans for their favorite rock n' roll diva.
  • 5:00 - 6:00 pm - One Piece Anime Spotlight, Room 1E04. Action, adventure and comedy on the high seas is on the agenda, with this preview of Eiichiro Oda's wild pirate adventure anime series, One Piece.
  • 5:00 - 6:00 pm - Running a Gothic & Lolita Fashion Studio, Room 1E08. Gothic & Lolita Bible editors Jenna Winterberg and Michelle Nguyen talk about the in's and out's of running a Gothic & Lolita fashion atelier in the U.S., and will feature the latest styles from homegrown design talents Megan McHugh (Megan and Maude), Samantha Rei (Blasphemina's Closet) and Victoria Michel (La Dauphine).
  • 5:00 - 6:00 pm - Bandai Entertainment Panel, Room 1E09. Reps from anime powerhouse Bandai talk about their new and upcoming releases, including the hotly anticipated Code Geass by Clamp and much more.
  • 5:30 - 6:30 pm - Writing for Manga Panel, TokyoPop booth 1321. TokyoPop creators Amy Reeder Hadley (Fool's Gold), Dan Jolley ( Warriors: The Manga), Frank Marraffino (The Dark Goodbye), James Faar (eV), Richard Knaak (WarCraft: The Sunwell Trilogy), Steve Buccellato (Battle of the Bands) and Svetlana Chmakova (Dramacon) talk about the unique challenges that come with crafting a compelling manga story.
  • 6:00 - 7:00 pm - Lucky Star Anime Premiere, Room 1E04. A new anime feature from Bandai Entertainment, about a smart and athletic teen girl who doesn't do well in school or sports, because she's an otaku.
  • 6:00 - 7:00 pm - FUNimation Panel, Room 1E09. The folks who brought you the Dragon Ball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist anime share their plans for their 2008 releases.
  • 7:00 - 8:00 pm - Shin Chan Anime Spotlight, Room 1E04. The crude and rude preschooler who makes Dennis the Menace look like a choirboy is back, and FUNimation will be showing off their hilarious new take on this anime series.
  • 7:00 - 8:00 pm - Death Note Anime Spotlight, Room 1E07. VIZ Media spotlights two episodes of this hit supernatural suspense series currently featured on Adult Swim.
