Oh Yen Press -- you're so low-key, it's almost lovable. After announcing in December that they'll be debuting a manga version of James Patterson's bestselling Maximum Ride series in their Yen Plus anthology magazine in Summer '08, we haven't heard a peep.
But a quick browse through the Free Comic Book Day page reveals down at the bottom a sneak peek of pages from Maximum Ride, which is their featured giveaway on Free Comic Book Day, May 3. If you click on the cover artwork, it'll launch a download of a 5-page PDF preview of sample pages created by newcomer Narae Lee.
Free Comic Book Day is exactly that -- a day when anyone can pop into their local comic shop and pick up some free comics. Many major publishers (and more than a few indies) are participating, with a few manga publishers in the mix too, with a Shonen Jump sampler from VIZ Media and a "Gekiga" sampler from Drawn and Quarterly on tap to be there for the takin'. Find a participating comic shop near you with this handy comic shop locator and mark your calendars for May 3 to pick up your freebies.
UPDATE: Maximum Ride is currently serialized in Yen Plus magazine, with the graphic novel due out in early 2009.

Man, I am chomping at the bit waiting for this to come out! I’m kind of bummed, I thought it was coming out later this year.
It’s actually going to debut in July in Yen Plus Magazine, in monthly installments. I think when January ’09 is mentioned as the debut, that’s when the graphic novel is scheduled to come out.

It’s already out! You can check out the first chapter in the pages of Yen Plus magazine, which just hit the newsstands this month. I think the first graphic novel volume should be out in early 2009.
i saw a yen plus magazine at metrotown, in Canada, BC. i looked in it and i found that manga… its seems pretty good but i couldn’t read much cuz i was in a hurry.
When it comes out im probably gonna buy it!

Faxness — it’ll be released the same time in the UK as the US, sometime in January or so. Yen Press releases all their manga concurrently in US / UK and Canada, one of the few that does so.
manga_freak — if you want to read it before the graphic novel comes out, just pick up copies of Yen Plus magazine! They’re up to issue 4 now, so get crackin’!
Its coming out rof USA in jan. 2009. And the vol.2 will come out in oct. 2009….

i love iggy! but…isnt he supposed to ba a strawberry-blonde? in ever pic i’ve seen, they have him as YELLOW-blonde. sorry, stuff like that bugs me. i wish i could fly. and random thought, i’m glad iggy didnt end up with tess. i wish they were a few years older…ah the dreams of a used-to-be-fifteen-now-sixteen year old… so… would you think a half angel would fit in and fall in love with iggy? and have those feelings returned? fan fics are fun. i havnt started it yet, but i will, i will.

I can’t say specifically when these books will arrive at your nearby Walmart — but since booth Maximum Ride Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 are out, you could do a few things:
1) request that your local Walmart carry it
2) find a local bookstore or comics store and request it from them. Most will be happy to do a special order for you, if they don’t already have it in stock.
4) order them online! Both Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com have these books in stock and can ship them to your doorstep in a matter of days.
enjoy! it’s a good read, so be sure to pick them up!

I LOVE Fang. His long hair at first was really hot, but now that he’s gotten his hair cut… Yummy. I’ve only read the first 2 mangas, unfortunately, but they’re great. I’m looking forward to anything else they have out already. I must say, that Maximum Ride and Fang are both my favourite characters.

Hm. I don’t know if/when a Maximum Ride movie is coming out. I only know that the three volumes of the Maximum Ride graphic novels) are out and available now from Yen Press.
I’d say check James Patterson’s Maximum Ride website for more info on the movie, if there is, in fact, one in the works.
