Saturday at Wondercon: Movies, Masquerade & Manga

Saturday February 23, 2008

Day Two of Wondercon promises to be one of the busiest, as Moscone Center South in San Francisco will be the epicenter of comics culture from 10 am - 7 pm. I'll be out and about taking in the fun, but here are a few highlights from today's events schedule:

  • Warner Brothers' Movie Previews Get Smart, 10,000 B.C. - 12:00 - 1:00 pm, Hall A - Get Smart Director Peter Segal is joined by stars Steve Carell (Maxwell Smart), and Anne Hathaway (Agent 99) as they chat about remaking everyone's screwball spy comedy TV series from the Sixties. Also, 10,000 B.C. Director Roland Emmerich and stars Steven Strait and Camilla Belle share a sneak peek at this new summer "epic adventure" of prehistoric proportions.
  • Disney Movie Previews Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Wall-E, 1:00 - 2:00, Hall A - The sequel to The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian takes fans back to the magical world of Narnia. Disney is promising "a very special guest" to introduce this exclusive sneak peek. Also, Director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) will be on hand to showcase Wall-E, about a robot who does what he's supposed to, until he discovers what he's meant for.
  • Meet TokyoPop Manga Creators, 2:00 - 2:30 pm, TokyoPop booth #721 - Meet and get your books signed by Brandon Graham (creator of King City), Lincy Chan (artist of Rhysmyth), Sho Murase (creator of Me2).
  • CBLDF Live Art Jam, 3:00 - 4:30 pm, Room 220 - Watch the magic happen and help out a good cause as fan favorite artists Jim Lee (Batman) and Terry Moore (Echo) will be sketching live. Their completed works will be auctioned off to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
  • Dark Horse Comics Preview, 4:00 - 5:00 pm, Room 204/206 - Dark Horse editor Shawna Gore and publicist Jeremy Atkins, as well as surprise creators and other guests, will give panel attendees a peek into Dark Horse's upcoming releases for 2008 and beyond.
  • TokyoPop and Jim Henson Productions' Spotlight on Legends of The Dark Crystal and Return to Labyrinth, 4:30 - 5:30 pm Room 200 - TokyoPop editor Tim Beedle and Return to Labyrinth writer Jake Forbes discuss the future of these two exciting graphic novel series and preview art from upcoming volumes. As a special bonus, all panel attendees will receive a free Legends of The Dark Crystal poster.
  • World Premiere of Justice League: The New Frontier, 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Hall A - Witness the formation of the greatest fighting force in the history of comics at the WonderCon exclusive world premiere of Justice League: The New Frontier, the DC Universe made-for-DVD animated film release presented by Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics.
  • Fourth Annual WonderCon Masquerade, 8:30 - 11:30 pm, Esplanade Ballroom - See dazzling costumes and entertaining skits by talented pros and cosplay amateurs. Always entertaining!
And of course, the exhibit hall will be filled with fans looking for that must-have collectible, cool new comics and maybe a sketch from their favorite artists. I'll be posting photos from the show later this weekend, so more to come!
